Sure thing kpr,
and my choice is to use a longbow during archery season and a longgun during firearms season.
Now tell me why x-guns should not be included in the gun season, in NY.
Archery equipment is permitted in all seasons, in NS.
NS must be way ahead of NY if it was already voted to allow them to be used in game habitat.

Soooo why would you not stick to using your bow in the rifle season?
Probably for the same reason "ethical" crossbow hunters wouldn't want to have to be in the rifle season.

I'm pretty sure on that site the people that run it are NOT anti crossbow.
They are all about getting disabled hunters on hunts by doing whatever it takes.
Posting buddies heresay that crossbows shouldn't be in archery season and that he can hit targets at 100yds with borrowed crossbows is probably NOT what they are looking for in a thread pumping someone up that is most likely suffering PTSD from being blown up.
I think quite possibly they are HUNTERS looking to get the guy hunting by whatever means he wants.
I myself support that 100%
If you read around the site you may find it is run alot differantly than the majority of sites around here.

I'm not so much anti crossbow as anti croddbow in archery season in NS. I looked at the site, was quick to realize that Horton Crossbows is a sponsor and posted what I did for 2 reasons

A lot of archers do not know about the strides made in adapting vertical bows for the disabled or that there are associations working with the disabled to get them back to what they were doinf before.

If NY has to pass cross bow laws, it may be faster to get the disabled vet back in the woods with adapted vertical bows that to get the laws changed in that state.

And if the vet is informed, it as you are all for, a way to give choices between going back to verical archery equipment or haaving to use a crossbow.

Hey kpr, time for you to form the first x-gun association in NS. Because it seems to me that that is what you want. When you get this affiliated with those that can help let me know. I am getting tired of your ranting. This is a bowhunting site.
Maybe you can cut and paste and use other folks words to help. There are plenty of x-gun sites that will give you some room for your cutting and pasting.
Try coming up with something original PLEASE.

Well that sounds like a whole lotta "work" to me 57.
I mean to form an assoc. one would have to get money from members, do all this and that, go through all kinds of politicing and kiss a few...well, grease a few palms here and there, you know what I mean?
I figure enough people would be interested in crossbows that they could very well stand on their own, kinda like rifle hunting without any real assoc. representing them.
Then again, those that oppose and want the woods all to themselves kinda fuel the need to form something in one form or another.

Stilll looking for an answer to a question I asked way back as to how many members BANS has and maybe how many bowhunters there are in the province?

i have no idea how accurate these numbers are KPR, but I heard a guy on the CBC radio say about 3000 bow stamps ( in referance to possibly getting a bow zone around Bridgewater ) are sold each year & I think the last BANS membership number i heard was around 200..... both based on my less than good memory........ no matter what the numbers are, the executive of any group can only base on the majority of the KNOWN opinions of membership in the belief that that is a fair representation of the entire bow hunting population.

You might assume that the 2800 others would support crossbows, just as easily as BANS assumes those 2800 non-members are content with the status quo.

Crossbows have no voice & will never become accepted in this province until someone can demonstrate both that they are safe & practical & that there is a population that wants them.....

I'm sorry pointy and hw , i know you try to make this site work.....but with a a pres who belittles folks acheivments....it's hard to stay involved or active.

I hope someone sees this before it's deleted ( and I don't blame you for deleting it Mr. admin- no hard feeling from me) but I gotta say this....

CAR....you should become involved in tthe associsation's out west (good luck hunting the scavengers your were boasting about recently) and leave this one to other folks who can try and build the membership and respect back to where it was before.

Meaning more members for BANS quite possibly?

With numbers that Alpo posted, 3000 bowhunters and 200 BANS members it is absolutely beyond me why BANS wouldn't be looking to make advancements and grow in numbers by supporting crossbows.....as I also said earlier, you guys always seem to be complaining there isn't enough involvment on the part of members...no-one attends meetings.....
More members would mean more involvment, more people attending meetings, and a louder voice I would think.
Personally talking to people offline I can't count on my hands and feet who would love to try a crossbow for hunting.
Bowhunters who are not BANS members as well as rifle hunters that don't bowhunt yet and even people who don't even hunt.

It's too bad that the ones that lead/represent this organization can't publicly take an IMPARTIAL stance rather than an ANTI stance no matter what their PERSONAL feelings are..

Kpr, I understood exactly what you were saying, the link confirmed that I wasn't mistaking your intentions. But I still do not see why the onus is on BANS to start actively supporting crossbows.

If BANS should start supporting crossbows, should TAANS start supporting compounds to get their numbers up? Should blackpowder organizations start supporting bowhunters of all types to get their numbers up? And if so, why are we currently aligned by our special interests? If pressure gets bans to start supporting crossbows, I will start actively pressuring BANS and TAANS to start supporting slingshots and blowguns for small game hunting (not being facetious here, I would love to see these as alternatives for partridge.) And a bonus for BANS and TAANS is that it would have more numbers, more money and be considered more relevant. It could start playing politics and developing positions to make as many people happy and supportive as possible (now I'm being facetious).

Currently, BANS is about vertical bows, it has been since the beginning. If a significant number of its members wanted it to be about crossbows and vertical bows, then the organization would either adopt this new stance, or split up. I am sure that I am not the only member of BANS who does more lurking than posting on this site, yet you are the only one who has posted so passionatly about bringing crossbows in. I am sure that if some of the lurkers felt your way that you would have received some thumbs up by now on this forum. Also, with less than 10% of NS's bowhunters being members of BANS, these are the people who are particularly passionate about what they feel bowhunting is. These two reasons are why I believe that the majority of BANS members are not interested in bringing them in. I absolutely do not believe that it is HW, PS or CAR who are suppressing the majority's will.

I was thinking it, and someone said it, why don't you start a special interest group in NS for crossbows? You're articulate and passionate, you have the respect of many members on NSH and here, no doubt that if anybody could do it, you could. BANS got started from nothing, a crossbow organization could easily do the same thing.

Sorry KPR but Barryonly has valid points this is called the Bowhunters Association. When this organization was formed back in 1978 there were no crossbow in NS. Today at this time they are STILL not legal to carry in game habitat. I find it quite odd that although so many folks say they know there is support for them but no one whats to organize to do that.

Now if you want to get technical here in NS we have a "Special Early Bow Season" not an" Archery Season" and in short the definition in the wildlife act reads; (b) "bow" means a tool for projecting arrows which consists of a handle and one or more flexible limbs which are held bent by a string or cable which is drawn, pulled or released or held in a drawn position by hand or hand-held release and not by any mechanical device attached to any portion of the bow other than the bowstring.

So I guess you can see why the Bowhunters Association is not in favor supporting Crossbow in the early Bow season.

Barry what I see that reply is alot of "us and them"
IMO things would be alot better in this province with regards to pressures on hunting and trapping if there was alot less of that kind of thinking.
Right the way across the board not just bows vs rifles,trappers and rabbit hunters, trad bows vs compound.
WE ARE ALL HUNTERS.
Whatever the means the end result is the same.
Anti's that would want it stopped for the most part could care less what the "means" are it's the "end" they target.
As long as it is ethical and respectful of the game you are persuing....I"m all for it 100%
Spears,slingshots,blowguns whatever, as long as it is ethical.
Sending a projectile through an animal in order to kill it quickly then eat it...the means to do that are irrelavant IMO.

Somwhere along the way someone has lobbied to say they are NOT bows and this is the "loophole" all the anti-crossbow orgs hide behind...probably the same orgs that lobbied to have it changed...they claim it's not a bow that is the meat and potatoes of their argument.

If I were looking to join an organization that supports hunting which is what is said online evertime there is an issue attacking hunting I CERTAINLY wouldn't join one that adamently opposes something I may like to try sometime....an ANTI group.
This isn't just about crossbows to me really, I could go through this forum and find/quote 20 times in a half hr where they are asking for more members and participation...it's kinda like a broken record for lack of a better word....

Whats happening now with this organization is it...all there is to it.

It ain't rocket science.

That said, if the org has reached it's peak
(which I think it did a while back and has since declined from what I have read and heard)
for gods sake don't block something else from happening that may bring new or more hunters into hunting in this province.
This is afterall the bowHUNTERS assoc.!

Didn't we give up a couple days of the bow season last fall for the youth hunt?
Purpose being to introduce more people to hunting.
Can't remember cause no-one asked my opinion......
Seem to remember reading about it online after it came into effect.

As for me starting any organization...forget it.
I got a sailors tongue and attitude...probably detremental to most causes.
By and by you can probably be thankful I haven't shown up at any meetings to be honest.
Sometimes responses just come out, at least online I have a chance to look at them first. ;D

BTW though, legalize crossbows this summer and I'd be hunting bear with one in Sept. and I'd bet I wouldn't be the only one.
If I could get my course/certificate from BANS in time cause I suspect they'd be pretty busy.

KPR - BANS has nothing to do with bowhunting courses - that is BIANS - The Bowhunting Instructors Association of NS. I believe that they have to obtain and review the course before they can teach it.

That being said, so far the resolution that was suported by most at the Federation AGM was to allow them in the Genereral Open Season (Deer). It was not a BANS resolution, but it was supported by BANS
