ok, so I have cleaned up enough to find a stave & some tools , let's see if I can make a bow. Here is a piece of hornbeam, 65" long, a bit over 3" wide for most of its length. found the mid-point then laid out a profile... the profile shown is a 5 " handle on centerline, 2" wide tapering to 1 " at the tips....but its drawn with pencil, so changes are still possible....given the width, would anyone suggest cutting this stave into 2 pieces along the blue chalk line & attempting 2 bows from this piece, or stick with the more forgiving line of best fit as shown.

Great to see you joining the bow build shop, alpo. Hard to go wrong with a stick of HB. I am interested to see how you get along with it. Quick note, when I use a stave that has some twists I like to follow the natural growth lines or keep the limbs wide. By making the limbs wide it cuts down on the amount of grain run off on the working parts of the limbs(edges). The stave will let you know what it needs to make it bend. Although they can be hard to read at times. Please keep us posted.

I got a bit more kindling peeled off & shaped the limbs some cutting it down to size W/ a draw knife & farriers rasp.... current dimensions are : 7/8" wide X 5/8" + thick at tips 1 1/16" wide X 7/16" thick at outer 1/3 point 1 1/4" wide X 7/16" think at inner 1/3 point handle area is still 2" wide x 1 1/2" thick....so I'll cut a bit more away at the fades & add string nocks next

Looking good. Those rasps are a fine wood cutter. That hornB is a clean piece to work with. It will soon be tiller time.

I like the way it is looking Alpo. Don't you fret AS, the shop is not big enough to get very far from the beltsander.

I should be able to get back to scraping today as the snow is preventing most everything else. No band saw or beltsanders have been used so far in this production though, but there was definitly some power assisted wood removal with an electric planer. I'll have more pic's to post by tomorrow.

Looking forward to the tillering and finishing steps - Any thoughts yet on how you are going to finish it - True, or Tung Oil, stain, leather, cord, spruce root for the handle, etc.
