I was lurking on the AANS site & they are re-hashing the AANS/FCA membership issue. I am admittedly un-informed, other that th bits i have read on the nsh.com threads about this very matter, & then on the aans site... to the point or question.. should every archer in the province be a AANS member ? Does shooting 3D actually require THEIR insurance, or should the coverage many of us already have and PAY thru work's group plans , or individule disabilty plans. For that matter , does joining a club automatically make you require EXTRA insurance, for things that are already covered by anorther plan you may already be paying for. and.... can BANS get affiliated with the FCA or whatever national org it is the carries this insurance, and basically have a paralell type of coverage available for anyone who wanted access this precious insurance without joining AANS or a local club. Did any of this get hashed out since the last time it was talked about, or is it awaiting some yet to come AGM ?

Most folks homeowners insurance will cover liability for a couple of million in the event of an accident.
I have had conversations with folks sbout the insurance and believe that decisions ob this type of thing would need to be done at the upcoming AGM.
Clair Ross - Bowood on this site can fill in the blanks. There may have to be a resolution to that affect presented at the AGM.
SOme clubs require you have insrance to shot at all shoots (CFB Halifax) - otherrs just for the sanctioned shoots. They are supposed to collect 5 dollars extra for this and after the shooter has attended enough sanctioned events to have paid the equivalent AAN membership in insurance, they become AANS members.
But that isn't being done.
When I got into archery I chose to joins TAANS and BANS. AANS just doen't do it for me. I would like to strat a Primitive Archers group, but there already too many splinter groups. I have liability insurance. (by the by -As I understand it the ANS insurance will only kick in when your personal insurance or assets do not mett the insurance need).

I'm not a member of AANS, and can't see any reason why I should have to join them just to get insurance coverage I already have. I have been reading the thread over there as well and it's starting to sound like archery blackmail. Lot of the same old same old AANS members want the whole archery community to play by their rules. I don;t think that there is any law stating that it is a MUST join organization. A lot of club memberships cover you at that club, but not at others. Maybe the way to settle this is for all archery org's in this province to have insurance. Then nobody would have to join another org just to get something they can't or don't get through their other org. NOw if somebody could tell me how joining would be better for me than not joining, other than the insurance BS I'm all ears.

I'm not trying to put down AANS, just don't see why I should have no choice but to join just to get insurance. If I was worried about competition scores OK but I have only gone to a couple shoots this summer and only 1-2 of those were sanctioned shoots. Heck my home owners insurance covers me where I do the most shooting ,in my yard. As for the argument somebody wants to us about the bow hunters thing, well I've hunted alot of years with rifle and nobody ever told me I had to join the NSRF or any other Assoc in order to go into the woods to hunt. The math just ain't adding up. Think thats why so many BOW HUNTERS don't see the need where the archers feel that they have to have.Things that make up go HUMMMMMMMMM. I feel that as a member of to groups now,one or the other should be able to offer me this so called liability insurance with out having to join a third to get it. Just my thoughts guys any others have any ideas.

I don't belong to aans either. I have justified this decision so far by saying that they do nothing for hunting. I picked up the bow because I wanted to hunt with it. That is why it was important to me to spend membership money in places where it would support hunting. I belong to BANS and the Digby East Fish and Game Association . I do attend a few 3D's every year and some will argue that it is target practice, not hunting practice...well, the jury is still out on that one for me. Anyways, having said the above, if someone explained to me that I NEEDED that insurance, I would gladly buy an aans membership, beacuse $25 is cheap insurance. So far, the only place that I have seen it required was at CFB Stadacona and that was at the request of the base commander. I don't attend that shoot, so, if that's the only reason to purchase it, I'll pass and spend $25 somewhere's that actively deals with hunting related issues. Clair...has BANS ever looked into the cost of providing liability insurance for it's members?

Apples and oranges, Guest.
Your home insurance covers your home against fire, theft, etc. There is also a liability portion that covers you as a homeowner if you damage other people's property, injure someone or if some one hurts them self on your property. Your work insurance is probably accidental death and dismemberment - term life insurance and you car insurance covers your car, its contents and if you damage some ones else's property.
The AANS insurance is personal liability insurance for if you kill or injure some one while shooting a bow. It does, however only come into effect when your personal liability insurance (usually from your house insurance) is insufficient to cover the liability the courts award the other party.

The AANS is the parent archery association in Nova Scotia. It is directly affiliated with the FCA. An AANS membership provides you with representation at National Archery meetings. An AANS membership will permit you to shoot in the AANS Provincial Championships and also the sanctioned shoot events leading up to the Annual event. As a member of AANS you can also participate at the FCA National championships. A number of clubs in the province make it mandatory to be a member of AANS. Take my club Scotian, they make it quite clear that AANS membership is a must. If you want to join this club you better be prepared to join both. Plain and simple.A far as the $5 a day paid at shoots goes ,that was solely for the purpose of insurance for the day. I dont believe paying $5 on the installment plan would get you an AANS membership HW. Its as simple as this. If you want to join AANS and shoot under its umbrella then do so. If you dont want to do this then dont. I would suggest that BANS get some kind of coverage for its members . Remember , nobody is telling you what to do you simply do what suits you. I see Bowhunters question was not answered tut tut tut. (well at least on here).

I believe it was a present or past AANS executive that explained it to me that way, IronFist. Anyway it doesn't work as no one does it. Not once this year did I have to pay the extra 5 dollars.

Now thats a darned good idea. However, getting insurance through BANS or any other organization would not allow you to shoot in The Provincials or Nationals or sanctioned shoots for that matter. Then again maybe a lot of us dont want that. The bottom line is that BANS should pursue the idea of offering insurance to the members who want it. Remember, AANS membership comes with Insurance its not extra. I think its a good deal personally but thats me.

Not 100% on this but I'm lead to believe that it had been looked into the past and was found to be to time consuming and not profitable in the fact that somebody would have to volunteer to administrate this. Take into the fact that as Ironfist said it would do nothing for insuring or allowing people to shoot at sanctioned shoots the issue was dropped. This is what I have been able to figure out, but all this was before my time.

Ironfist, are you ready to step up and do this for BANS members? Bowhunter was answered a long time ago. Thanks for your concern.

I am quite happy with the insurance I have now. AS far as stepping up and doing this for BANS. ,Isnt that what the executive does.Maybe if BANS had a BOD there would be somebody to do this job. Sheldon says that somebody would have to volunteer to do this job or at least thats what he had heard. Does BANS really need a volunteer from the ranks to make a phone call or make inquiries. I am responding to the original post by ALPO where he says "can Bans get affiliated with the FCA " also there seems to be some misunderstanding and lack of knowledge on how the Insurance issue works. Archeryman as far as Bowhunters question is concerned I was referring to the lack of response on this thread , I think the people who come here would like to have seen a reply it might be interesting. You are welcome.
