I am hearing funny rumors again this year. You know crossbow in bow season stuff but also that the early season will start the 2nd week of sept and the special late season has been scratched to accomodate this. Anyone know if this accurate or just more bs? Well all the kids are waking up so I am gone again.

Back in the early part of June, we had a meeting with the heads of the DNR Large Mammals group, and they did say there was to be changes this year...but they wouldn't expand upon what those changes were to be. Tomorrow is the opening day of the Antlerless Draw, and they still haven't posted the tag allottments yet.
Something's afoot...I don't know what...but am anxious to find out ! Even the crossbow guys haven't had their season confirmed, as of yet.

It seems to get worst every year. DNR is later getting info out, decisions seem to get made by some phantom group of people, etc, etc. Seems to me that they are doing what they can to get rid of hunting completely. It is hard to get excited and look forward to the season when we don't actually know what, or when the seasons might start, end or what tags are available or what bag limits might be.

Well...Recently, I don't think there are too many people who have taken a tougher stance against DNR than me. When I drew up those graphs and stuff, I was pretty disillusioned at what I was seeing. Since then, I've had the chance to speak with the Large Mammals Group (LMG) on a few occasions...and it seems that they are opening up to the insights of the hunting community. Right now, Nova Scotia Environment (formerly DOE) is the government's 'golden child'...what they want, they get...and the DNR and its interests are subordinate to them. The DNR is between a rock and a hard place with funding and personnel cuts. There's only so much that can be done when the 'big boss' (ie government) doesn't care. The environment?...That's a different story! Gotta save all those wildlands...Get recognized by world associations... "Here ya go NSE...Write your own cheque!...Want all Crown Lands for your playground?...Here ya go !...Take 'em all !" The DNR is not the bad guy...they're being pummelled to the ground...IMHO. I think we are on the road to a more reponsive and responsible wildlife management in NS. The schmozzel happening in the Highlands with the moose hunt is NSE's doing...not DNR's. The current hold-up with the antlerless tags I think is due to some inputs from the hunting community. It may be disquieting, but "stay the course...hold 'er steady"...I think (hope) this is a positive sign of things to come. (Edit in... I see the numbers are out for the antlerless tags...down by 25% and Zone 102 no longer has the 'Bonus' tag. Yup...the DNR IS listening !! )

Thank you for the response. If what you are saying is true then maybe my kids will get a chance to hunt and trap yet.

No problem, noluck ! ;D I truly view the DNR's action to be positive...although some on the whiner's site are already shooting them down over it. Some people are just too immediate...Getting our deer herd back to where we want it is NOT going to happen at the snap of the fingers. As Confuscious say..."Every journey start with first step" Later Bud...

So rifle season is over and the final week of bowhunting is upon us. Who is going out for that one last hunt? I had an 8 pointer standing within spitting distance of the front step thursday, he knew I was working on the house addition. That needs to be finished before the other addition arrives in a couple of weeks so hunting has taken a back seat again this year. Maybe next year.

I looked, and couldn't find it, noluck... So I guess a nail gun is NOT a legal weapon for hunting deer ! ;D Sooo many things messed up on me this year...my tag is gone and not a bit of meat to show for it. My hunting partner and I talked about it yesterday on the way home from Tatamagouche...C'MON 2013 !! (My grandmother would frown on that..."Bobby, you're just wishing your life away!"...is what she would say.

Well here it is the final day and I am stilling only hunting pine trim boards with a nailgun. Stopping today long enough to go in for her last ultrasound and then cut open the wall into the addition. Going to be a long day and deer season is long since over. Oh well maybe a bunny hunt over christmas and maybe even have a few days to soak some muskrat traps. Probably not though with three kids under 3 years old and a newborn! Busy holiday this year.

Welllllllll...You should have a ready supply of toothpicks, noluck !!!! It may be discouraging, but you've got your priorities in order! The hunting will come. We 'old' farts have all been through it, and the day that you get to take one of those youngin's to the woods, is the day that your hunting progresses to a whole different level...It's a completely different perspective of hunting's purpose. Git 'er dunnnnnnnnnnnn. (I hear that the Bass River Bunny Hunt will be January 12...as an FYI)
