Chignecto wilderness area to be preserved

The province is looking at its options to establish a wilderness area in Cumberland County.

The proposed 35,000-hectare site would include the Chignecto Game Sanctuary and surrounding provincial lands. The goal of land conservation must be weighed with other interests, such as mining, recreation, forestry and hunting, said a news release from the departments of Environment and Natural Resources on Monday.

It’s expected the boundaries of the proposed wilderness area will be announced in the coming months, followed by public meetings.
