I have been having a problem lately with my carbon arrows. The fletchings have been peeling off. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I know of another person I have spoken to who has been having this problem and we have different arrow suppliers. I have always thought that maybe the shaft wasn't prepped properly before the glue was put on. I thought the recipe was a little sanding, then wipe down with methylhydrate, add glue and fletches and set in jig. I am considering buying a Bohnig jig (single) with a left helicoil from Cabelas just so I can fix my carbons myself, anyone have one of these jigs and if so how well do they work?

Thats all I use is the little single fletchers, If you hold your mouth the right way you can even set it and your nock to replace one damaged vane instead of stripping all off and starting over.
I use the platinum fletch tite, seems to bond a bit better than the white tube, and just use a green scrubby pad and alcohol to prep the shafts. And found that giving the vane a little scrub helps to rough up and clean any preservative or oils from the molding process.

Thanks super dave, only thing is Phil's is in Halifax and i'm on the south shore. And I shoot alot and I always have a bundle of arrows to go to Woodswise Outfitters and and bundle up there fixed and ready to let loose. If it works for you AS, I will probably give it a try myself. Do you use the helicoil? Left or right or does it even matter? I have always used left just because that was how I started.

I use right helical, i have 3 of the single plastic jigs mounted on a piece of pine board to do 3 at a time, the little 2" vanes usually go on straight their so short you dont notice a left or right twist anyway. But I have to get myself left jig for my traditional arrows, I have about 300 left wing feathers from various birds and no left jig!
Left- right doesnt matter as long as the arrow gets spinning to stabalize the broadhead, some argued that if you shoot left use right and shoot right use left! most target shooters use straight I think. But if your bow isnt properly tuned that will do damage to your fletching also if the arrow is launching all funny and smacking your rest or not in a wisker biscuit the right way etc... some of these new bows shoot so fast I dont think fletching plays to important a role any more?

Well, my fletching jig is here from cabelas took about a week to get it. But I couldn't get the vanes or glue from cabelas, they wouldn't ship to my address. So I ordered from NAP. This is the second order I have placed with them and likely my last. Both times months have gone by and the reply to my enquires is always the same, "on backorder we will ship next week". By the by, next week never comes. Those guys suck.

Glue is a pain to have shipped and back orders can take three or four months. let the shipper sub on the order and you will get something very similar. Buy local and you can eliminate the problem. Good luck, noluck. Clair

Phil of Phil's Archery also has an ad at the top of the BANS.ca page. He will ship vanes and probably glue. He is in Eastern Passage, near Dartmouth

Hey guys I fletch all my arrows with a single jig from Martin. I used tohave the same problem with fletchings peeling when I did carbons. I started roughing them up and then scrubbing them with acetone, seems to work really well, never had a problem since. By the way I also started using the platinum fletching glue.

I will be in Bridgewater twice in March, and I bet Phil will be there at the end of March. I bet if you sent him a list of what you need, either he or I can bring it down.

I picked up a few 4" fletches from Woodswise in Bridgewater as well as a tube of the platinum fletchtite, now just to find the time to try it out and see what I can do with it. I still haven't heard anything from NAP!
