A week from today is the opener ! Hard to believe a whole year has gone by already! I've got one stand hung...and another spot earmarked for one...neither of which'll likely get used ! I'm a stillhunter, for the most part. As my hunting partner says, "Why buy stands?...You need good boots instead !" ;D The deer numbers look good up at the camp...about the same as last year. The BIG problem I have is that Wagner sprayed the neighboring property with 'Vision' the week before last, and I don't know how or if it's going to effect the deer. It is what it is...If hunting was meant to be easy, there'd be no reward to it when you're successful.

I am hoping to get a few days of practise in this week before saturday. I put my trail cam up last week, I took all three kids in the woods for that one! I haven't gotten back to check it yet. You don't get many picutres when there is no bait. Hopefully tomorrow morning when I get off work I can get out and put up my ground blind, unless something is off that is where it will stay for the rest of bow season. Looking forward to the season but I already know I wont get much time especially with the wife due again in december.

NOLUCK...NOluck...noluck... tsssk, tsk, tsk...Don'cha know ya gotta plan these things !! ;D Pretty soon we'll be sitting down and looking back on this season...it'll be gone before we know it! I haven't got the fever hard...yet!...But I think I'm coming down with it! First couple of weekends are usually for getting the camp in order...just early and late hunts. But this year Thanksgiving is early and that's generally when I start hunting hard. 'Nother year...'nother season to enjoy...

Well, I spent yesterday digging and trying to find the septic tank so guess what I didn't get done? Hopefully the kids will cooperate this morning and we can go out and setup the blind and check the camera.

That is a horrible joke! Anyway hopefully some still hunting on Saturday afternoon. The trip with the kids turned into a horror show as the girls both found puddles to fall into and the boy became fixated on picking bark off a certain red spruce tree and I couldn't get him to move. The good thing is that they all have been asking to go back into the woods which I think is a good thing.

IMHO...I think kids need to be 'given the reins' when they're in the woods. I hate to use the analogy...but even a young dog needs to be allowed to explore, and the trainer just tags along. There's lots of interesting things out there...lots of fun to be had. If the experience becomes just parking their arse in one spot?...b-o-r-i-n-g ! Ya may not have got done what you hoped to accomplish...but, in the long run, you may have got done what you really want to accomplish...instilling the want to go again.

The morning hunt up Tatamagouche wasn't too bad...weather wise. No deer seen. The afternoon rained pretty hard, off and on, until about 5:00, and then it was drizzle and light showers. My hunting partner had a big doe come out...but we don't have tags...and I got to chat with the squirrels...who I'm sure all think I'm nuts !!! ;D

Hunting is about the journey not the destination. It looks like I might get out monday. Between work and kids this looks like this will be a thin hunting season.

Well good luck. Hopefully the air gets a little crispy and gets them starting to move for you. Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to you too, noluck ! Maaannnnn...the deer movement at the camp is slow right now! This time last year, I think I had 6 or 7 different bucks on my cams...now I've just got 1 spike and a nice doe. They sprayed the neighboring property with 'Vision' (to kill the saplings) in late August, and it appears the deer have moved out...along with every other woodland critter. Before they sprayed, it was nothing to have pictures of 7 or 8 deer at a time out in the foodplot. I went stillhunting yesterday morning and got up on (~10 yds) 2 young does that were bedded in the ferns...comical...the first one busted outta there...the second jumped up and stood there all confused before it noticed me. I could've thrown the arrow at it. I may have to cover a bunch of new ground this year...we'll see. Hopefully this is just a warm weather lull...but I'm not banking on it.

I did have a good thanksgiving as I had a sister from truro, one from toronto and my 88 year old grandmother down at my parents place in Riverport, but it did mean that yesterday's hunting didn't happen and i'm ok with that. If only my brother and his family (Alberta) had shown it would have been a time! Now looking to start my hunting season on Friday afternoon/Saturday.

I went out yesterday...bird hunting. No bow...just me and my 20 ga. Went to the spot where I shot the first partridge in front of my son...I think he was 4 at the time. Got 1 bird...probably should've had one other...saw 4 deer.
I was thinking yesterday...For all the costs associated with hunting and stuff, we should at least bring a bird home...or a rabbit...at the end of the day. That's the way I used to hunt...didn't matter if it was a deer, rabbit, or partridge...sumthin' was comin' home. I thinks I's gots to get back to them thar ways !!
