I have tried to get out deer hunting a couple of times. It is too warm or raining or like today, both. Checking the trail cam, the big doe is always by herself but she stopped showing up midday. This last week it has been around 6:30pm to 7pm and then she is back again at 2:30am, 4 out of 5 nights. Maybe something will happen monday before I head to work (night shift).

I probably saw 20 deer between Earltown and Tatamagouche Friday evening...they were certainly on the feed bag with the weather that was coming. Hunted Saturday morning until the rain started...didn't see anything. Got back to the camp, and figured I'd have a bit of a nap ;D...had to be back in Dartmouth for a Christening at 5:30. The absolute quiet, other than the the rain on the roof...next thing I know it's 2:00 !! Piled all the gear on the bike...tore off down the trail...come around the corner to my hunting partner's 'front' foodplot...and there's 3 does staring at me, standing broadside! They let me tear right by...I couldn't believe it! Normally the deer are hightailing it out of there when we see them. Aaaaahhhhh...they're all safe this year...we didn't even apply for doe tags. Maybe they knooooowwwwww..... ;D

I have laid down in the camp and wake up after dark many times. There is nothing like the quiet back beside the lake. I have also fallen asleep just sitting against a tree and woke up after sunset. One evening I was awoken by coyotes howling. That was the longest trip out that I have ever had to make. But it makes for an excellent story, maybe sometime i'll share that one.

Congrats Connie!
I let a doe pass last Sat, she was the one I wanted to take but it just seemed right letting her walk. I just enjoyed watching her, she was a nice doe.
Sometimes it's about the experience, just nice getting out if you know what I mean.

The kids got the flu from granny and decided to share with mommy and daddy, and now even the baby is sick with it. I went out weds afternoon, but was sneezing and coughing everywhere. Seems to be letting up now so maybe this afternoon.

Out yesterday afternoon and had a really good time. From the family of porqupines, the bunny that sat on the same log I was sitting on (I could have reached down and patted it!), to the racoons that sounded like pigs coming down the hill beside me. It was a little cool but I had extra layers for that. The kicker was as I was leaving I decided to check the trail cam and in the pics from the night before there is a 5 point buck!! First time I had seen that there, but not the doe I was hoping to take. Oh well if everything turns out I should be getting out this afternoon again.

So, with the rifle and archery seasons winding down, I was wondering how everyone is doing?

Well... I had my eye on 3 real good deer... But the area they were travelling didn't set up too well for the bow. After the early season, I picked up the rifle (yeah...I know...the shame!)...and on Nov. 4 I took the smallest of the 'big three'...a very nice 8 pointer...probably just over the 200# mark.
From the start of the early bow, to Nov. 4, I had 15 different bucks catalogued on my game cam. I could have taken 3 of them with the bow (I think), but with all the stuff going on around our deer herd, I figured I'd be very selective this year, and was prepared to take no deer at all. Now that I've learned them a bit better, hopefully next year I'll be able to figure out their patterns and the still virgin 'Firecat' will be getting her first notch !

Congratulations Bob! I have found all my deer that I have harvested with my bow to be way more heart pounding and exciting then with the rifle. Still got a few days this week for the extended bow season, but I doubt I will even make any trips out with the kids and dr's appointments. Well next year hopefully the kids can help some.

...I have found all my deer that I have harvested with my bow to be way more heart pounding and exciting then with the rifle. ... I agree, wholeheartedly, with ya there, noluck ! In 15 or 20 seconds (if that long) it was all done...Mannn...I can't even make an interesting story out of it !! "There he is...Bang...done..." Nothing like 15 or 20 minutes of waiting on a shot...the adrenaline and excitement building...the fear of being winded, and then the want of a well placed arrow... And, personally, I think a bow shot deer typically tastes better, too. Not that this guy is bad...exact opposite, actually, he's VERY good...but in general, they bleed out soooo much better on the arrow.

didn't get out much but shot a small 8 point .
My bear hunting was interesting as I was only able to get out a few times, the bear came , the food was gone and he didn't come back. THEN I had to get to work on a few big projects and that was that.
WHO would have thought tha three raccoons could eat thirty five pounds of cattle feed and thirty litres of friar oil in four night !!
I sewar you could see them get bigger in every picture.

Well congratulations on the deer. I know I watched more racoons and porqupines then anything else this year. One day I sat and wondered what porqupine would taste like, that's how bad it was.
