I finally broke down and picked up a recurve for Fathers Day. I used to shoot the wife's long bow but never felt like it would be a good thing to go hunting with it. But I will definitely take my recurve hunting if I can get enough practise in with it before the season! Man, this thing is so different from the long bow it isn't funny! I am so glad I got it. I have a few aluminum arrows with it right now but soon I will have wooden ones. I think my safe range is probably shortened from 25-30yrds from my compound to 15-20yrds but I am grouping decent and the arrows definitely penetrate. Practise, practise, and practise!!!

shot a 3D deer today. had a great time, shooting well from 5 to 25 yards. Looks like I'm on the way to converting another compound shooter to recurve.

It's a Ragim Impala. I have only been out 3 times to the 3D target I have setup here in the yard. Always seems to be a diaper to be changed!

I was out for a few minutes today. Made about 60 shots. I really didn't notice any drop, out at 25yrds. But I have to work on the release, I am using a glove instead of a tab. I was wondering if 3 fingers under is better or some other configuration of fingers over and under nock? I have been using 3 fingers under and it seems alright. My poor 3d buck is falling apart, over the last year I shot out 1 replacement centre almost a second and a few errant shots that have totally took out the top of the deer and 1 shot today that hit underneath and almost tore the bottom apart. My block has a hugh hole in it in the middle. Any ideas on what is a good long lasting target?

shooting 3 under or Mediterranean style is a personal chice. Some people like to gap shoot and 3 under works great for them. I like med. style or two under as it works for me.
A tab usually gives a much smoother release but I've shot a glove so long, and it works for me and I like that's it's always ready, that I'm sticking with it. Too old to change LOL
As far as field point targets I like the Bulldog Targets as they have a lifetime replacement warranty on the target faces. Some of the sponsors on here have some great bag targets that will last for ten thousand shots or more. Give the closest one to you a shout.
I know Rick at Common Cross sells a Mackenzie 3D deer target that lasts for years or you can get some lower priced ones that won't last as long before needing replacement. Look around near you.

I tried getting some supplies around here but ended up ordering a bunch of stuff from 3 Rivers Archery. I got a dozen wooden arrows, dozen field points, 1/2 dozen 3 blade broadheads, brush buttons, etc. One thing I got that I have no idea how to use is otter hair silencers. As with all the items from 3 Rivers there are no instructions, but it didn't occur to me that there were none until I was sitting there getting ready to put it on. Any ideas with this one?

They have a video on the site that shows you how to install them, you can also search for it on You Tube as their video is on there too. very informative.

I forgot about those videos! I'm on dialup so it takes quite awhile to watch any videos, but I will check it out. Thanks!

Well, good news bad news scenerio. Good news is I watched the video and have installed the otter fur. Bad news is I had time to do that and not out practising, I seem to have managed to re-aggravate the damaged disc in my back. Physio and doc says lay around, ice and small back extensions. I have taken this chance to gear up 3 practise wooden arrows with glue on broadheads for when I can get out there again. Loosing this practise time I might have to reconsider using the compound this Fall.

don't give up yet. listen to the dr. and your body. When you do heal up shoot three or four arrows from differnt yardages and put the bow away. Repeat a few times a day and you might make it. shooting so few arrows a day you'll find your concentration is better.
That's the system I used last year to come back from a broen bow arm elbow. SLOW but steady.
good luck and if it's not there then bag one with the compound. Good luck.
DON't give up on the recurve, recovery can be slow but it's SO much fun when you get there.

Went out this morning for a quick shoot before anyone got up! If the wife caught me I'd probably be in trouble. I took your advice acadianarcher and limited my shooting to only a few shots (only 12). 6 with field point and 6 with broadheads. Man I have to start taking the camera with when I step out! First eating the flowers on the back deck was a little doe, then once a let my first shot fly at my delta buck a little 8 pointer went running from a few trees behind my back stop (this is a 6' mound of dirt)! Then I shot 3 field points and all shots were grouped with 3" of each other 2 with feathers brushed against each other. Then the next 3 field points were all within 4" of my target spot! Good so far. Next the broadheads, first time shooting broadheads with the recurve. The first shot at 15yrds was deadon and almost a complete shoot through!! Next shot was in the hard plastic leg and also almost a complete thru and tru! 3rd shot same as second! The next 3 shots all hit the vitals but I didn't like the grouping as I had a heart shot (low), lung shot (good) and a liver shot (too far back for me). The broadheads really have punching power, unlike what I have seen from my compound, I will try with my recurve this bow season as long as I get ample practise in. Now my fp are supposed to be 125g and the same as the bh, but I found the broadheads were starting to drop at 15yrds. Is there something that I can do with that or just the way bh's shoot from a recurve?

Well, I snuck out again this morning to send a few down the line. Really should have stayed inside. I shot a few of field points and everything seemed fine, so I decided to switch to the broadheads. Oh Boy! First shot hit the bottom of the deer target and actually deflected down into the ground! All I saw was feathers go flying, so I went and checked and the arrow broke at the feathers! OK just some wierdness, go back out and try again. Next shot perfect double lungs. Next shot through the lungs, out the other side just tip into the dirt. Go to target to remove them, the one was ok, the one that just touched the dirt I tapped it against the target to knock the dirt off and the arrow broke right at the broadhead clean off, and went flying in the tall grass, searched for it for 5 minutes and couldn't find it. Go back to field points, first shot, through and through... crack! Broke off at field point, to H*** with this, try again tomorrow!
