I am hoping to get out tuesday afternoon and start baiting. Never done it before so I have no idea what to do. If I remember the camera I will get some pics and post them.

OH yeah! Just got back from setting up my first bait site. A great chance to learn lots of new things! First thing learned was it takes a long time to pop enough popcorn to fill a roughneck tote. Secondly it is easier to melt the lard and add the liquid smoke before you go out to the site and realize it was a good idea to have done that. Thirdly there are puddles that do not have bottoms. Now, for bait I have popcorn with marshmellows and chicken scraps. This will change once I see what they are going after. I found a pile of blueberry puke very close to my site after I had it setup. What fun! I will try and post pics once they are uploaded (dialup).

No luck...no need to add liquid smoke to the lard just spray it around site on trees and stuff. Hope ya got a line attaching that tuff box (gonna be a NOT so TUFF box soon) to that tree, you may have to go and find it after you get a hit. Was it all blueberries/raspberries you saw? No blackberries yet? Where the heck are you south shore guys finding lard that needs to be melted? Tuk has some too!!! I thought they outlawed that stuff.

CRAP! I knew that I forgot something. I bought a lenght of chain in the morning before I went out and I left it laying in the middle of the floor along with the padlock. Hopefully I will be able to get back tonight after work. I have been saving bacon fat, lard and any old used veggie oil for the last few years. I have been thinking about bear hunting for awhile. Trust me I have a very limited supply. Next trip and I will be out. No blackberries yet.

Do you get up to the valley at all? Valley Exhibition next week all week in Lawrencetown I could spare a bucket or two of fryer oil, you could try local by going to any resturaunt and ask what they do with their old oil. It's getting harder to find because people doing the so called BIO diesel thing in their cars and homes has created competition. That SOLID lard, if you took it and a pair of dish gloves and spread it by hand up n down a tree trunk they would stand there for hours lickin it clean, might even de-bark the tree and eat that too make for some good t-cam pics They "probably" won't take it far as it will spill it's contents quick I think which is also good as it will keep them there a bit pickin it all up...one piece at a time.

Hey KPR :
The solid grease i'm talkin about is from sausage and bacon fat , so it's in a semi-solid state when it cools. I've been getting that from the Kitchen at work . I'll probably smear it on the trees as you say. Never did freeze it though . I have the same problem trying to get the oil though...However being the great patron of the local Pub that I am ....the owner is kind enough to let me have what I need free of charge.
If I get a little extra cash I think I 'm going to have to invest in a trail cam . Do you guys have some type of support group for your addiction ? I checked the Detox Unit at work...no luck there.
Hey Sticks...was out yesterday looking around and there are quite a few Blue & Rasp Berries out there right now ( north of Mahone Bay ) . I think I'm going to wait a bit . Never seem to have any hits when the berries are on . Haven't seen any Blackberries yet . Sometimes I wonder if I would be better off waitng til deer season . Once a lot of the fall food sources dry up there seems to be a lot of hits on deer piles . They should have a few extra pounds on them by then as well.

We're heading back in a few minutes to check the trailcam and baitsite. Also spent the evening popping more popcorn to hopefully refresh the bait. Will post anything of interest. The best part of these 12hr michelin shifts when you are not working all your time is yours. But when you work you don't do much else. 2 days on and 3 off, then 3 on and 2 off. I think that works out well for baiting because otherwise I would be wanting to check it everyday.

noluck...
I noticed that you are not a member on the Bears East Adventures site . If you haven't been there ...check it out . Excellent site for bear hunters and you won't find a better bunch of folks to help you along . You can spend hours going thru the threads.

Thanks for the invite tuk. I was over there once before, might be a good place for me to head after todays outting. Just got back, once again soaked, a different puddle this time and pants instead of shorts. AAAGGGHHHH! Anyway, nothing. No pics on the camera, no new tracks, nothing. Not even racoons picking at the bait and I know that further out the trail there are coon tracks. I must have done something wrong. I'll what until Monday morning before considering making changes. Maybe 2 days is much too short of a time?

noluck, for the first baiting I always put out something really rancid to stink the place up and get them coming in ( fish parts etc...) they usually dont touch it because its rotten - cubs tend to roll around in it!!, once you have them coming just use your normal bait and the smell will be gone by the time you start sitting in your stand. I dont know about the hickory smoke flavoring? good when BBQing salmon! And the Anise oil put it on a maxi pad and hang up high in a tree ( holds the scent longer than a sponge or rag ) Make it attractive and they will come!!!! Good luck and have fun, and make sure to tend to the camera before playing with your bait!
