well i would really like to have one of them lil handsfree grunters, so i'll add a post just to make sure i am eligible. I used a 'doe" grunt or bleat saterday night & had a spike come in to about 30 yards immeadiatly & hang just out of view til dark, i could see him with the binoc's but the naked eye couldn't even find him. by dark he was within ten yards, but still staying in the thick cover. Among my many mistakes during the hour i had him so close, was the clinking of the call against the zipper on my jacket...., that could be what kept him from coming closer or showing himself sooner.

Hey thats great alpo. Sounds like it was a fun day in the woods no matter if you got to take the shot or not. Good luck next time you get out.

SO Alpo were you in the gully ?
Great news though - probably not the "clink" if that was all the noise you made - more likely he saw motion - or something out of place - Were you silhouetted, did you have any cover in front of you ?
Something made him wary - it probably wasn't smell as he was staying around.
I'm not saying ya smell bad, just different than the rest of the woods.

not the gully, a freind called & wanted to show me some place new, so we get to a spot where there are clearcuts on both side of the road, with the wind blowing almost parallel to the road, he took the east side, i took the west , moving slow like yer 'spose to till i see that there are choppings on either side of a small brook & i am looking about 100 yards up a hill, acrossed the stream , into the wind, next step & a big tail attached to a big hind end is taking off up that hill, so i try a sat right down on a stump, beside / infront of a poplar top they left behind. a couple of open lanes to the stream i thought, & attempted to call that one back. seconds later I am not alone, but no way that other one could have found his way back so quick... and i realize i sat down in a not so perfect spot. This little guy goes up & down the stream bed, in thick young evergreen cover for the next hour at least. So i am scanning the thickets 30-40 yards away with the binocs & find a bit of white that moved, then later on i watched his nostrils flaring thru the woods, but thats all i could see was the nose. he went away & came back a couple times & i only saw the lil antlers right at dark after he had me pinned all that time & finally was coming out of the thick stuff, a little exciting, but now i have seconds of daylight left & he is behind cover over my left shoulder. Bolted when i tried to turn my body a bit to face him. I had no cover, but was lower than the brush behind me, but open to the thicket, wind was perfect in my face, but i had sound from every peice of gear i had along it seemed.

Sounds exciting - too bad that first rump spotted you before you spotted it. That why I saw you gotta move so slow you see every leaf from 1 foot in front of you to the limit of your vision. Most folks look too far in front, thinking they have covered everything now lets look at what we can see now. I pick a spot about halfway to my limit of vision - every step - then I look in circles around that point (with only eye movement if possible) until I've seen what there is to see. Then another step or two until I have cover on two sides if possible, but always to my front and no more than 5 steps. You usually end up with a little zig-zag. Usually takes me 2-5 minutes to identify eveything that just doesn't look right before I take the next step.
Good luck - you'll get him

I hear ya, and I have heard the same from others.... slow down & stay hidden yourself....keep the deer wondering where you are now.....but it's so tempting to move to where you have a good field of view.....thats why i keep getting busted tho !
