Turkey Hunt May 2006 ?

I went to Maine for a real quick day and a half turkey hunt ( archery only in the fall ) a couple weeks ago.

Without a word of a lie I saw over, or around, ( when you see that many you tend to lose count ) 100 birds ! Mostly Hens and their poults from last spring ( and both sexes are legal during the special fall archery hunt).

I'll tell ya this...them buggers are tough with a bow ! I was soooo close on sooo many occaisions but never got to let the arrow slip from my fingers. It was making my blood pressure soar !

Seemed I always zigged when I should have zagged lol ! Or too much brush. Or just slighty too far. Or if the birds had 2 likely travel routes- I picked the wrong one. Or. Or. Or. You know the story I'm sure.

Hunting them in the spring is easier for sure ! Of that I'm convinced.

ps- By the way.....This guy is more than reasonable with his prices, is a very capable guide, knows turkey and their habits and is just a generaly nice guy to hunt with ( this is my third trip with him)...and he told me that he would save the first week of the first season next spring for me and anybody who wanted to make the trip with me ( gun or bow).
It's an action packed hunt, with plenty of heart pounding action. If you've never hunted these birds in the spring - seriously- ya don't know what you are missing. I know I'm hooked.

Hey that would be a blast. It would be fun to get a couple guys together and do a weekend hunt. Heck you can get to Bangor in under 7 hour, and that not even pushing it. Now if I can only find the cash,

That would require a passport by then huh ?
And are the border patrol pretty easy for traveling hunters to deal with ?

I'm not sure when the passport will be "required".. Yup, so far they have been pretty good to deal with

It is Pirate ! It is an absolute blast. Usually, we figure out where they have roosted for the night and go back an hour or so before daylight the next day. After flydown, we try and call them over our way. If that fails sometimes we "run n gun" kinda like walking around calling occaissionaly, trying to get a tom to gobble back. When one does, it's time to set up and have a go at him.

Some folks call turkey hunting "poor mans elk" and it is cuz the calling/walking etc is similar.

Keep that upcoming hunt in mind if you are interested..

BEA is this a hunt that you do every year or have you just started into it. Sound like it would be alot of fun, now to only come up with the funding.

What kind of cost are we talking about BEA. I looked into Maine turkey hunting last year but I was really busy. With someone else to go with, might be interesting. Cost would determine this though.

The cost is 125 per day ( but I'm working on getting that lowered - maybe) but includes a nice dinner after the hunt for the day.

The hotel is 49 US per night...2 double beds......plus gas and permits.

It is do-able for sure.........

I think we have room for 6...sorry 4 cuz myself and my son are taking 2 of those spots lol !

It would be nice if anyone wanted to come to let me know by say mid February or so......

Can you remember off hand what the premits cost?

I think about 80 bucks....


The one I bought in the fall..was also a deer tag and was about 95 US.

Once the new regs are out ( January) I'll post more definate costs etc.
